Smashbox Make-Up

(My skin: Fair colouring, Normal - though prone to both dry and oily areas, Hormonal break-outs usually around my chin/neck, Dark under-eye, in my mid-thirties so some anti-aging concerns)

I'm always on the look-out for the next best thing. But mainly, I haven't found basics that I am happy with - namely a foundation/powder, and under-eye concealer for dark circles.

I did get into the brand tarte. I use their BB cream daily, and recently tried their pressed powder and concealer stick. Right now I'm using tarte's BB cream as my foundation - it's super-light; mousse like. BUT, as a brand, tarte is hard to get in New Zealand: it isn't sold in shops here, so it's either auction sites, or overseas beauty sites (and NOT Sephora anymore, after they cut off my freight-forwarding service).

My recent forays into foundation brands include: Mac, benefit, and Revlon. None of the products I tried were quite right.

I've always been curious about Smashbox. As a brand, it's expensive here, and rather exclusive. In the US, it's much more affordable, though still a high-end brand.

So, I jumped right in! Below is a photo of my latest Smashbox haul (I also ordered a liquid foundation, but got the colour completely wrong).

Items include:
  • Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder, 15G/.529OZ (full-sized), in Light/Neutral
  • Travel-size Full Exposure Palette, .14 fl. Oz. / 4 ml
  • Photo Finish Hydrating Under Eye Primer, 0.33 fl. Oz./10 ml
  • Brow Tech To Go, in Brunette
  • High Definition Liquid Concealer, in Light

Off the bat, I really like the Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder! It's my favourite find from the order.

Smashbox touts it as the first anti-aging powder with the science of skin care built in. The formulation: pure gold, 48 minerals, 11 amino acids and a powerful peptide that delivers dynamic anti-aging benefits, while the patented hydration system continuously revitalizes skin for a brighter, more radiant complexion all day.

And: after 10 minutes there is a 33% decrease in the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes, after 6 weeks of use, there is a 67% decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles overall. It's also oil-free, talc-free, and paraben-free.

What I notice is that it blends on my skin beautifully (to apply the powder, I use my Urban Decay Good Karma Optical Blurring Brush - say that 10 times fast!). I've not used a loose powder like this before, but it's easy! It has a system of twisting the top to release a small amount of powder - this means I don't feel like I am wasting any. Swirl your brush around, give it a wee tap, and away we go.

I've been using it over my BB cream. No chalky finish (yay!). No setting into creases (yay!). The light/neutral colour seems to work for me - I am going to try the next lighter one just in case (in the travel size). It sets nicely, gives a matte look, and helps to cover-up some redness and light blemishes.

Overall, I'm  impressed with the effect/coverage! If it does all the other stuff it's supposed to do, I'll consider it a bonus. It certainly beats out the tarte pressed powder. Do I dare say this is a HG* item for me?!

The other item I love is the Brow Tech To Go. The colour (Brunette - a dark brown), is easy to twist up for application. The shape of the tip allows for thick AND thin lines. The gel on the end is a nice finishing touch! I get my brows shaped and tinted once a month, but this is great for touch-ups. This morning a female colleague commented on how nice my brows looked hehe So it must be making a difference!

The under eye primer, and the concealer are fine - I'm not wowed yet. I don't have an under eye primer so I will keep using that, and the concealer certainly works on spots (just not completely sure about under my eyes). I'm going to try Smashbox's concealer stick (opposed to this liquid one) as I've read some positive reviews around covering dark under eye circles.

As for the Full Exposure travel palette - I'm already a fan of the full-sized palette, so I am familiar with the colours (I actually like to use the matte colours as a base, and sweep the glittery shades over top). This is small and super-thin; perfect for on-the-go!

*HG = Holy Grail item hehe.
